On the Celebration of the International Museum Day 2011, with the theme "Museums and Memory", the Science and Technology Museum started the second cycle of events dedicated to the Elderly. The new cycle was co-organized with the Deputy Mayor for Gender Equality, Longevity and Immigration of the Municipality of Patras, during the week from May 30 to June 3, 2011: "The Museum of Science and Technology Welcomes the Elderly". In this context, the Science and Technology Museum and the Deputy Mayor for Gender Equality, Longevity and Immigration of the Municipality of Patras invited as many elderly people as they wished to get to know the Science and Technology Museum and to participate in the above events.
The third age is a new audience for the Science and Technology Museum, which was approached for the first time. The elderly are the main carriers of memory. Having gone through a period of years, with lots of stored memories of experiences and events, and possessing items of memory, such as old photographs, old objects, etc., can surely enrich the collections of the Science and Technology Museum.
During this week, groups of members of the Open Elderly Care centers (KAPI) of Patras were given a tour of the exhibition "Telecommunications in our lives", watched excerpts from the film "From the Beacons to the Internet", discussed with the Museum officials their memories, related to old technologies of the telephone, telegrams, etc. and explored the possibilities of their voluntary participation in the activities of the Science and Technology Museum.
Participants in the event donated to the Museum objects related to the evolution of telecommunications. Through this event, the Museum aimed to develop a fruitful collaboration with seniors, enabling them to continue to be useful by offering their services in various areas of the Museum that may be of interest to them.
