Science & Technology Museum, University of Patras Campus, Greece

The Science and Technology Museum at the University of Patras, in collaboration with the Greek branch of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Primary and Secondary Education Directorates of Achaia - Environmental Education, is organizing a hybrid event at the museum on November 26, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. The event is part of the European Academic Heritage Day 2024, themed “University Museum Collections as a Tool for Raising Awareness on Sustainable Development.”

The European Academic Heritage Day was established by the European Academic Heritage Network - Universeum. It is celebrated each year around November 18 by university museums/collections and universities across Europe with events, conferences, and other activities, providing free access to university museums and collections. The celebration’s goal is to open university museums and collections to the public. Through diverse activities, these museums encourage and engage the public in discovering their rich resources and understanding the significance of academic heritage, its contributions to the advancement of science and knowledge, and its role as a vital component of European cultural identity.

In alignment with the ICOM Action Plan for Sustainable Development, the event promotes the role of museums as educational tools for raising social awareness. Museums play a vital role in fostering a sustainable and resilient future, guided by the UN’s 2030 Agenda (People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships), while also sharing these objectives with their communities as they navigate their own pathways toward a sustainable future.

Speakers at the event will include:

  • Andromache Katselaki, Ph.D., archaeologist - M.A. in Art History, Head of the Department of Educational Programs and Communications, Directorate of Archaeological Museums, Exhibitions, and Educational Programs-Ministry of Culture, on “Cultivating Inclusion in Museums through the Work of the Department of Educational Programs and Communications of the Ministry of Culture.”
  • Ioanna Papaioannou and Eleni Antonakopoulou, Heads of Environmental Education for Secondary and Primary Education Directorates of Achaia, on “Environmental Education and the Science and Technology Museum: A Sustainable Collaboration.”
  • Peny Theologi-Gouti, Head of the Science and Technology Museum and Vice-President of the Greek ICOM Branch, on “The Interaction of the Science and Technology Museum’s Collections as a Tool for Raising Awareness on Sustainable Development.”

A reception will follow, and attendees will have the opportunity to view and interact with the museum’s kits exhibits.
