Local Photo Contest

The Science and Technology Museum (STM) of the University of Patras and the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Achaia - Environmental Education are organizing a Local Photography Competition with the Theme:

“Capturing the water systems of my country”

The objectives of the Competition are:

  • to acquaint students with the aquatic ecosystems of their country,
  • understand the importance of water ecosystems formed by rivers and lakes
  • discover the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems, but also saving water use.
  • To be sensitized about the direct or indirect contribution of water systems to human well-being and generally to the sustainable development of their country.

In this context, the student environmental groups of the schools of Achaia are invited to:

  • discover the water systems of their country
  • capture aquatic ecosystems through photographs
  • write a title, caption and brief information for each photo
  • submit their photos by May 15, 2023.

The material collected will constitute an important educational collection of photographs of aquatic ecosystems, which will be used by the organizers:

  • initially through a Digital Virtual Reality Exhibition that will be posted on the websites of the Environmental Education Department of Achaia and the Science and Technology (STM) of the University of Patras
  • then through a Photo Exhibition that will be implemented at the Science and Technology Museum

The Competition Organizing Committee consists of:

   Eleni Zagana, Assoc. Professor, Hydrogeologist, Chairman of the Hydrogeology Committee of the Geological Society of Greece.

   Ioanna Papaioannou, Head of the Environmental Education, Directorate of Secondary Education of Achaia.

   Eleni Antonakopoulou, Head of the Environmental Education, Directorate of Primary Education of Achaia,

   Panagiotis Anastassopoulos, Hygienist, MSc Public Health, Region of Public Administration

   Chrysanthi Vantaraki, Art teacher, Secondary Education of Achaia, President of the Patras Visual Artists Association.

 

The objectives of the Competition are:

  • for the students to get to know the aquatic ecosystems of their country,
  • to understand the importance of water ecosystems formed by rivers and lakes
  • to discover how important it is to protect water ecosystems, but also to save water use.
  • to become aware of the direct or indirect contribution of water systems to human well-being and more generally to the sustainable development of their country.

Photo Specifications

  • Photos can be taken with any digital or analog camera or mobile phone or tablet.
  • Photos can be in color or black and white and their orientation can be horizontal or vertical.
  • Photos resolution must be 1200×1800 or higher.
  • The aspect ratio is free.

Terms and Conditions of Participation in the Competition

1. Individuals or groups consisting of 2-3 students from the Primary or Secondary Education of Achaia can take part in the competition. Each person or group can take part with 1-3 photos. There is no limit to the number of teams a school can enter.

2. Entries and prizes are divided into four age categories:

Student or groups of students:

a) small elementary classes (1st, 2nd 3rd grades)

b) large classes of Primary (4th,5th, 6th grades)

c) Junior High Schools

d) High Schools /Vocational High Schools

3. The participation of students is optional and the consent of parents and guardians is required for their participation. Participating students do not necessarily have to belong to the same department or class. A teacher from the school of any specialty is appointed to be responsible for each group.

4. Participation in the competition has no financial burden on the students or the school.

5. The Science and Technology Museum and the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Achaia - Environmental Education undertake the process of implementing the competition without income or any financial benefit from the projects that will be submitted.

6. The Science and Technology Museum and the Environmental Education Officers of the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Achaia will ensure the personal data and copyright of the creators.

7. The competition is not involved in the promotion of commercial products, as well as in the provision, free distribution, distribution, or sale of any kind of material (print or otherwise) that is judged to be advertising, proselytizing, propaganda, or aimed at specific groups of the population.

8. In order for the nomination to be considered valid, by May 15, 2023, the online competition participation form must be fully completed, https://forms.gle/4QKnwLF3rabkVYaDA

9. The submitted photos must, by May 15, 2023, be uploaded to a cloud computing service (e.g. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox), set the appropriate access rights to them, and then submit the links to them via the online form above.

  • The photos to be submitted must meet specific specifications:

- The photos can be taken with any digital or analog camera or mobile phone or tablet. The photos can be in color or black and white and their orientation can be horizontal or vertical.

- Photos must have a resolution of 1200×1800 or higher. The aspect ratio is free.

11. Photos should be captioned. Each photo should be accompanied by information on the exact location of the photo, the date it was taken, the type of camera used, the name of the teacher in charge, the school, class and/or department to which the student(s) belong, the names students' town/village and a caption with information.

12. Nominations will be judged by committees that will decide the winner of each category.

13. The details of the winners will be published on the website of the Museum, on the websites of the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Achaia - Environmental Education and in the press. The schools will be informed by e-mail to the address they have stated in writing in the application for participation.

14. All participants will receive certificates of participation electronically.
