Science & Technology Museum, University of Patras Campus, Greece

The School Network titled: “Traditional Games: Discover, Play, Create” is a School Network organized by the Primary Education Directorate of Achaia / Cultural Affairs, through the Head of Cultural Affairs, the Secondary Education Directorate of Achaia / Cultural Affairs, and the Science and Technology Museum of the University of Patras, in collaboration with the Patras Visual Arts Association, under the scientific guidance of Ms. Cleo Gougoulis, retired Associate Professor in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Patras, for the school years 2025–2026.

The aim of the Network is to enrich teaching practices and tools through tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Through this Network, students are expected to discover and record traditional folk games and the techniques used to make them—through interviews—and to create traditional “toy-objects.”

Teachers and students are expected to create an educational toolkit containing traditional board games, with the support of the Museum of Science and Technology and the Primary Education Directorate of Achaia / Cultural Affairs, through the Head of Cultural Affairs. They will also promote the value of traditional games through outreach activities in collaboration with the Senior Citizens’ Centers (KAPI) of the city, in order to foster active citizenship.

As a teaching methodology, experiential workshops and teamwork are proposed, as they enhance participatory and active learning. The initiative is based on the principles of constructivist educational theory, which emphasize the interaction among participants as well as the sociocultural environment within which the learning process takes place.
