  01 April 2022 - 30 April 2022

Science & Technology Museum, University of Patras Campus, Greece

The functional copy was manufactured in the Laboratory of Wired Telecommunications of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras, in the 1970s to demonstrate the operation of the Electric Telegraph to the students of the Department.

Includes:

  • source of electricity,
  • transmitter/controller for the production of intermittent electricity,
  • the line for the transmission of electricity from one station to another and
  • receiver with a coil to receive intermittent currents.

An electric telegraph is a device that transmits messages from one station to another with the help of electricity. It was invented by Samuel Morse in 1838, who thought he could transmit two wires of electricity intermittently. The signal durations represent the letters of the alphabet. Morse invented an alphabet, the “Morse code” which consists of short and long currents (dots and dashes). The different combination of dots and dashes gives the whole alphabet and the numbers 0 to 9.
