Electric pendulum

Object of the Month
pendulum
  01 April 2024 - 30 April 2024

Science & Technology Museum, University of Patras Campus, Greece

It consists of a Wimshurst electrostatic machine, connected to two metal discs each placed on a base. Between the discs hangs a light ball wrapped in aluminum foil. When we turn on the electrostatic machine, a high-voltage electric field is produced between the discs.

The electric pendulum, as a conductive object, reacts to this field and is charged with the corresponding amount of electric charge. If the voltage is high enough, the electric pendulum can acquire enough electrical energy to deviate from its original position and move in the direction of the electric field. The electric pendulum moves between the two discs reciprocating, transferring loads from one disc to the other. The movement of the pendulum will depend on the strength of the electric field and the amount of charge it acquires.
