The event for the Celebration of the World Volunteer Day "Volunteering and Social Networking" took place with great success on Sunday, April 12, 2011, in the evening, in the Auditorium of the Science and Technology Museum.

The event was organized by the Science and Technology Museum of the University of Patras, in collaboration with the Directorate of Secondary Education of the Prefecture of Achaia and the Friends Association of the STM.

Greetings were given by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. A. Rousou, the Director of the STM Prof. E. Vitoratos, the Deputy Minister of Volunteering, Gender Equality, NPO, Immigrant Integration & Citizen Service of the Municipality of Patras Mrs. M. Andrikopoulou-Rouvali, the Director of Secondary Education of the Prefecture of Achaia Dr. E. Pierri and the President of the Friends Association of the STM Emeritus Prof. T. Deligiannis.

The Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the UP, N. Avouris presented the contribution of social networking in the dissemination of volunteering. Mrs. Maria Nikolopoulou, Head of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Secondary Education of Achaia, presented the "Volunteering Network of Secondary Education Schools of Achaia with the STM of UP”, while the schools 1st HS of Patras, Experimental HS of Patras, 7th JHS of Patras, JHS of Kastritsi and JHS of Arsakeio of Patras presented the activities they planned within the Network. Ms. Peny Theologi-Gouti, Architect Mech-Ethnologist, curator of the STM presented "The network of volunteers of the Science and Technology Museum". This was followed by the awarding of diplomas to students who volunteered their services at the Science and Technology Museum during the academic year 2010-2011. The ceremony ended with the awarding of a diploma to the major sponsor of the Museum for 2010-2011, which is Vodafone. The diploma for Vodafone was received by the Regional Director Mr. A. Andriopoulos.

The event ended with a concert by the Jazz Duo "Tree Stories", courtesy of the Philippos Nakas Conservatory. "Tree Stories" consisting of Vassilis Tziatzias (guitars, arrangements) and Maria Oikonomou (vocals), performed magical works by Pat Metheny – one of the greatest living guitarists & composers of Jazz - with voice and guitar in the main roles, but also the contribution of a "Virtual Jazz Quartet" through playback, which resulted in orchestrating the pieces on a computer, as well as some representative pieces from the Jazz Standards collection.
